ABOUT THE SOCIETY
The
Southern Counties Railway Society was formed in 1948 by a group of
school friends from the Southampton and Eastleigh areas who shared a
common interest in transport and particularly railways. The aim of the
Society was and remains to foster an interest in rail transport by
arranging meetings, and visits to railway installations. As its title
suggests the main focus of interest for the Society is the south of
England with a particular emphasis on the territory of the former
Southern Railway. Initially meetings were held in Eastleigh Grammar
School, subsequently transferring to the campus of Southampton
University, before moving to the current venue of the Friends Meeting
House in Ordnance Road, Southampton. Some of the founding members still
belong to the Society.
Membership is open to any person aged 14 years or over. Further details are provided on the membership form.

The Society produces a monthly newsletter – "Track Topics"
– and has done so without a break since 1948. As well as giving details
of forthcoming meetings, and reporting previous ones, it aims to
provide members with local railway news and articles of historic
interest. Contributions from members are welcome. The
Southern Counties Railway Society is run by an elected Executive
Committee comprising Chairman, Vice-Chairman, Secretary, Treasurer, and
up to four additional members. The Society also has a President. For
2011/12 the officers and committee comprise:
President Bert Moody
Chairman Paul Gosling
Vice Chairman & Secretary David Mead
Treasurer Stewart Smith
Committee Alistair Jeffery (Newsletter Editor), Robin Mitchell (Catering), John Goodrich.
Meetings, comprising slide or filmshows, talks or quizzes are held on
the third Saturday of the month between September and June. Entry to
meetings is free, but we request that frequent visitors become members
of the Society. The June meeting is the Annual General Meeting. The
venue is The Friends Meeting House, 1A Ordnance Road, off London Road,
Southampton SO15 2AZ.
